Master Chess is a straightforward browser chess board. There is no lobby, no queue and no ranking ladder: you pick who you are playing, the pieces are set up, and the first move is yours. It is a very different tempo from the rest of Shell Shockers, and that is the reason to keep it nearby.

Most games on this site are about reflexes and aim. Chess is the opposite, and a lot of players like having both a few tabs apart: a fast round of shooting, then a slow, quiet game where the only thing that matters is the next move. A game can take five minutes or an hour, depending entirely on how long you think.

The game offers two ways to play. You can take on the computer, with a choice of difficulty, or sit two players at one screen and pass the mouse or trackpad back and forth. It also lets you undo a move, which makes it useful for learning: you can try an idea, see why it fails, and take it back.

How to play

Choose one player to face the computer, or two players for a game on the same screen. To move, drag a piece onto a highlighted square. The highlights show the legal destinations for that piece, so you cannot make an illegal move by accident, and they are a handy way to check how a piece you are unsure about moves.

The rules are standard chess. Each side has sixteen pieces, bishops stay on their colour, knights jump, and the game ends when a king is checkmated or when neither side can force a win and it is drawn. Pawns move forward one square, capture diagonally, and can promote on the far rank.

Tips

• Start on a lower difficulty and raise it once you are winning comfortably. Jumping straight to the top level mostly teaches you how it feels to lose a queen.
• Control the centre early and bring your knights and bishops out before moving the same piece twice. Castling early keeps your king safe.
• Before every move, ask what the computer threatens now, not just what you want to do. Most lost pieces are ones left undefended for a single turn.
• Use undo to learn, not to dodge every mistake. If a move loses material, look for the reason before taking it back.
